What is Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials is a Government certification scheme to the get the UK protected from cyber threats. Cyber Essentials is a set of controls which determine if a business is adequately protecting themselves from cyber threats.
Obtaining Cyber Essentials certification demonstrates an organisation's commitment to security and protecting their data. Evidence has shown that organisations that achieve Cyber Essentials can protect against 80% of cyber attacks. Free cyber liability insurance is provided for organisations that achieve Cyber Essentials certification (terms apply).
There are two levels of certification. The first is Cyber Essentials, which is a self-assessment option based on a set of questions that are submitted to an independent certification body for marking. There are around 70 questions spanning 5 critical technical controls; User Access Control, Firewalls and Internet Gateways, Secure Configuration, Patch Management and Malware Protection. The second option is Cyber Essentials Plus, which requires a qualified assessor to audit that all of the elements from the five technical controls are being put into practice.
Who runs Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials is run by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), which is part of the Government Communication Headquarters (GCHQ). The NCSC appointed IASME (Information Assurance for Small and Medium Enterprises Consortium) as the official Cyber Essentials partner and have responsibility for the delivery of the scheme. IASME oversee all of the Certification Bodies and qualified cyber security companies that participate in the Cyber Essentials scheme.
How long does the Cyber Essentials certification last?
Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus certificates expire after 12 months.
What is involved?
A security audit will be conducted to assess the five critical technical controls, and the data gathered will be used in the completion of the Cyber Essentials Questionnaire. The audit and questionnaire will then be analysed, and a security gap assessment report will be produced. If applicable, a recommendation of required remedial actions will be provided, which would need to be rectified before submitting the questionnaire for certification.
Once the questionnaire has been submitted, an independent certification body will review, and if satisfied, will pass the organisation as compliant and issue a Cyber Essentials certificate.
Cyber Essentials Plus involves a technical audit of the five critical security controls covered on the self-assessment questionnaire. Audits are being performed remotely at present, and the assessor will test a random sample of the systems within scope, check that installed software has the latest updates, send fake viruses and malicious emails to verify that sufficient malware protection is in place, check that installed software has the latest updates, and conduct an external vulnerability scan of your public IP address(s). If any issues are identified, the auditor will provide a report detailing any required remedial actions that will need to be rectified before the audit can be signed off, otherwise, the Cyber Essentials Plus certificate will be issued.
